The Black Bird and the Splendid Fairy Wren
She already knew of my passion for the sea, and the wonderment I experienced as I watched the break of day. I had spoken to her of the black bird with the orange beak, the one that always appeared whenever Rod and I visited Squeaky Beach, Ken’s “special place” at Wilson’s Promontory. The place we chose to scatter his ashes.
‘What bird comes to mind when you think of Rod?’ she asked
‘The Splendid Fairy Wren’ I replied. ‘They are rare, their blue beauty multifaceted, they bring joy with just a momentary glimpse and a flutter of their tail. Yes I have always admired the Splendid Fairy Wren’.
And so the painting commissioned to commemorate two lives has a black bird with an orange beak flying into the dawn, and a Splendid Fairy Wren resting on the foliage in the foreground. Then there is the silhouette of a man and his son, glimpsed through the sea mist.
